Virginia Public Records

(sponsored by Archives.com)

The Virginia Public Records Act (VPRAct) was created to ensure governmental transparency and the uniform treatment of records across the commonwealth. For a list of what is generally considered public and exempt, please click here.  For a list of records type that are specifically exempt in the state of Virginia, click here.

The law further states that each agency will be responsible for the proper retention and management of their records, and that if no one is appointed from within the agency to act as Records Officer, then that responsibility falls upon the agency head.  For the purposes of AllFreeRecords, if there is no Records Officer listed with the agency contact info, it is assumed that the agency head or the chief administrator is the correct contact.
