North Dakota Public Records

The North Dakota Open Records Laws are a set of statutes outlining the rules and duties pertaining to government records that are created by and for the North Dakota State Government. These laws ensure the pubic right to access certain records while simultaneously protecting confidentiality and public safety.
To better understand these laws and what they mean for you, the North Dakota Attorney General has created a citizens guide complete with relevant court cases, opinions and further explanation of definitions and findings.
Requests for public record access within the state of North Dakota must be made with the appropriate agency within the state or county that is most likely to hold them (usually the county in which the event on record occurred). A list of county agencies and contacts can be found on the county pages. (coming soon)
